Self care. Self care. Self care. You may have been hearing this phrase often, but tell me, have you actually practiced this? After a long week of work, school, and trying to be human by socializing, it is often hard to set aside that time to actually give yourself a little extra love.
In today’s society we beat ourselves up if we aren’t busy. We have trained each other to believe that if we aren’t at work, we should be at school. If we aren’t at school, or work, you should be doing something else productive. I even find myself at times feeling terrible if I even get an ounce of rest when I know there’s other things that I could be doing.
Taking time to take care of you is VERY IMPORTANT. Just in case you didn’t really register that sentence I’m going to type it again. Taking time to take care of you is VERY IMPORTANT. A wise woman told me that self care resembles the emergency instructions flight attendants give you on a plane. You have to put your oxygen mask on first, then help those around you. I have been on many flights, but that statement never really registered with me. It very much so correlated with self care. You have to make sure your mind, body, emotions, and soul are in good condition to be able to give to others. You keep breaking your one slice of bread to feed everyone, to only leave yourself with crumbs.
You may think that you are actually doing yourself a favor by pulling those all nighters, but in the long run you aren’t. That sleep you missed out on, is now lost.
I promise you my love, you ARE doing enough. Take a step back and breathe. Take this Sunday night to rest and ease your mind. This may sound shocking but you can close your textbook, your laptop, and sleep. You don’t have to bring work problems with you inside your place of peace. When you step into your home leave those outside problems, outside.
The things I like to do when I feel like I need some more loving are listed below. I know everyone is different. Everyone’s moving and getting prepared for the week ahead, but I challenge you to do one of these things this week. I promise you’ll see a difference.
you may be thinking that you already bathe daily, but let me explain. this isn’t just any ole’ bath. It’s a bath where you soak and wash off all of your worries from last week. Recenter yourself and get a break from all the stress. p.s
play some of your favorite songs, and add candles when youre really feeling a little spicy
you owe this time to yourself
2. Getting some much needed SLEEP
if your schedule is anything like mine, you may have been lacking in this area. Sleep actually helps your body become rejuvenated for the next day. It is ESSENTIAL, you NEED sleep. Going home early from a long week to catch up on some rest is a key remedy for me. even if you’re a homebody give yourself an extra hour to sleep today
3. Nutritional Meals
during the week i feel like my motto is “if it isn’t served fast, I’ll pass”. which causes a chain reaction in me missing the nutrients I actually need for the week (I’m working on this too) preparing a meal with theproper nutritional elements is self Care at its finest
4. Put your phone down
the fact that we are accustomed to having our phones glued to our hands, is sometimes scary to me. between social media, and socializing physically it can get overwhelming being nosy, we don’t always have to know what other people are up to. When I start to feel overwhelmed, I check out with others, to check in with myself. Log out of social media, tell your friends you need a break, and then actually take that break.
I’m not saying it’s a guarantee that if you use these methods you’d be charged up, these are things that I implement to make myself feel warm and important. I’m not telling you what you need to do, I’m just saying get into the habit of actually of giving your universe some TLC.
